Welcome to Richard Gray Cabinetmaker

Custom Cabinetry & Architectural Woodworking in Greater Boston & Nantucket

Richard Gray Cabinetmaker builds and installs custom cabinets in the Greater Boston and Nantucket area, including (but not limited to) kitchens, baths, built-ins, libraries, offices, laundry rooms and mud rooms. We also provide architectural woodworking, including duplication and installation of one-of-a-kind antique moldings, as well as custom furniture such as tables, desks, dressers, and beds. We work closely with individuals as well as collaborate with architects, interior designers, and contractors to create custom home and office environments based on the unique styles and needs of our clients.

Custom Cabinetry

Whether renovating an antique kitchen, upgrading an uninspired master bath or creating a media center to accommodate new technology, Richard Gray works with each client to create customized cabinetry that integrates seamlessly into the rest of the home. Raised panels, stepped crown moldings and dovetailed drawers are all part of the attention to detail that makes each piece unique.

Finishes range from oil-stained and hand-rubbed to sanded and painted to accommodate home styles that vary from the antique and traditional to the light-hearted summer home or contemporary city retreat.

Handcrafted Furniture

Every piece of furniture by Richard Gray is built with integrity from start to finish. He works with each client to determine the style, select the wood and identify the desired finish. Each plank is specifically chosen for its color, natural grain, unique characteristics and natural defects. Additional design elements, such as hand-painted or glass tiles, are painstakingly selected to complete the desired effect.

Each piece is cut, hand-planed, assembled and thoroughly sanded to a smooth, fine surface, and then either stained or painted. Oils, stains and waxes are applied in multiple layers, each often hand-rubbed directly into the wood, allowing it to penetrate deeply, enhancing the color and enriching its natural grain.

Architectural Woodworking

The distinguishing characteristic in homes of great quality often lies in the added details: the elegance of a crown molding, the classic line of wainscoting, the aesthetic feel of a well-designed fireplace mantle. Architectural woodworking details such as period-specific moldings, frames, handrails or mantels can be the finishing touch that ties a multi-faceted project together.

Fluted pilasters can anchor a fireplace to its late 19th century origins in a Cambridge home, a porch sunburst welcomes guests to an old ranger's cabin, while a majestic redwood ceiling is crafted to suit an Arts + Crafts-styled mountain retreat. Inspired details, such as mirrors that replicate the unique character of a Nantucket doorway, gives a Master Bath its own distinguishing touch.
